PACKA Gear | Exploring the Rare Species of Wild Animals in Mount Siguniang
In November 2022, an exciting chapter in wildlife research began with the Sichuan Institute of Environmental Science's exploration of Mount Siguniang’s flagship species. For the first time, two wild snow leopards, “Mr. S” and “Broken Tail,” were captured on camera in this elusive region, marking a significant milestone in the study of these majestic creatures and filling a critical gap in knowledge about the wild snow leopard population in this area.
Fast forward to early summer 2024, as the vibrant green expanse of the valleys on Mount Siguniang began to emerge once again, PACKA, an innovative brand specializing in water sports gear, had the honor of participating in the continuation of this flagship species exploration. Joining the dedicated research team, we returned to biodiversity observation sites, equipped with infrared cameras, to witness the living wonders of this remote mountain range. These rare and precious creatures continue to thrive and reproduce, undisturbed in the embrace of Mount Siguniang.

The ecosystem here is truly extraordinary. Wild goats leap freely across the rugged terrain, while red foxes leave their tracks in a wide range of environments—from deserts and semi-deserts to tundra, forests, and farmlands. Amidst it all, the snow leopard returns to the scene. The research team confirmed the presence of a new, independent individual—a snow leopard named “Chubby Snow,” further solidifying the region’s importance as a sanctuary for this iconic species. At least three wild snow leopards are now known to inhabit Mount Siguniang, moving gracefully through the snow-capped mountains, like silent guardians of this sacred land.
Mount Siguniang is also home to other endangered species, each more awe-inspiring than the last. The green-tailed pheasant, a rare and unique bird endemic to China, flashes its brilliant feathers like a rainbow across the sky, casting an auspicious glow over the land. Other endangered species that call this mountain home include the blue-capped robin, yellow-throated marten, blood pheasant, Reeves' muntjac, Asiatic black bear, and water deer.
As the flagship species exploration project continues, we are not just witnesses to the miraculous diversity of life but also feel a deep sense of responsibility and purpose in preserving it. Scientific research in such a challenging environment requires resilience and determination—traversing treacherous mountains and rivers, enduring harsh conditions, and facing obstacles that would deter most. It is a journey of patience, perseverance, and dedication.
Throughout our time in the field on Mount Siguniang, PACKA’s products proved invaluable. Specifically, the PACKA SPY self-inflating PFD played a vital role in ensuring the safety of the research team as they navigated rivers and lakes. The PFD's self-inflation function, activated simply by opening an air valve, allowed for quick and efficient use in unpredictable environments. When it was time to pack up, the jacket could be easily deflated, reducing its volume for hassle-free transport. With three independent air chambers for enhanced safety and a high-back design that ensured comfort and breathability, the PFD proved essential in supporting the team during their aquatic fieldwork. The added mesh structure of the PFD ensured that the team remained comfortable, even in the most strenuous conditions.

As the Mount Siguniang flagship species exploration project—*“What Are We Searching For?”*—progresses, we eagerly anticipate the next phase of this ongoing journey. With every step, we uncover more stories of life, resilience, and the deep connection between humanity and the wild. Let us continue to protect and cherish this beautiful land, as we write the next chapter in its remarkable history.
